"...and this is how I design..." 

The experience I have gained over the course of these 8 weeks has been immense. The team at SSJ Associates is a young talented group that works hard to ensure that the best results are obtained in their projects. They were very friendly, and were always willing to help me if I had any doubts regarding the work they gave me. I learned so much regarding design and picked up a lot of valuable information when designing the interior of a building such as furniture, materiality, different types of finishes etc. The projects I was assigned to gave me the opportunity to be aware of the different types of products, materials, finishes and installation techniques available and best suited for buildings in Sri Lanka.

Another aspect that I was not too familiar with is the process of preparing tender documentation. I gained much knowledge in this area as I was able to coordinate work with various contractors etc.

I was also made aware of permit application and building regulations of the country where I learned much about regulations in design regarding street and building lines, rear space etc.

Finally, I also got the chance to attend the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects’ Annual National Conference with the team where I attended panel discussions held by famous local architects and foreign architects who spoke of their international projects as well as projects they have undertaken in Sri Lanka. The theme for this year’s conference was “Return of the City – Megastructure Redefined” in which they revealed plans for further development of Sri Lanka’s urban fabric and how the buildings of the future can aid in enriching the urban life within major cities whilst also focusing on trying to preserve the country’s rich history and cultural heritage. This was an exciting experience as I got to listen to many architects speak of their work and know that I too have the chance to contribute to the architectural development of my country.
